Vina Cobos

Argentine Malbec is now a staple on most wine lists and in most wine racks. It is so familiar now that many wine drinkers would find it difficult to remember a time when Malbec from Argentina was not around, although the popularity has only grown in the last ten years or so.

In 1989 the renowned Californian wine-maker Paul Hobbs travelled over the Andes from Chile to Mendoza in north west Argentina. He fell in love with the place, its people and its potential to make great wines. He experimented with Chardonnay and Malbec. His first 10 barrel production of Malbec was influential in persuading the American wine press of the grape's potential.

In 1989 Paul Hobbes opened his own winery Vina Cobos. Vina Cobos has vineyards in Lujan de Cuyo and Valle de Uco. Situated at an altitude of 2,600 - 4,600 feet they are dry, arid sites where careful irrigation is used to provide just enough water to produce low yields of concentrated fruit.

The vineyards and winery are run using organic principals and solar panels provide electricity. The grapes are fermented using only wild yeasts and the wines are unfiltered and unfined.

Whilst the top wines from the vineyard sell for hundreds of pounds, the Felino range offer real value at £15.50. The Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec are all characterised by freshness and balance with pure fruit.

To celebrate Vina Cobos this month we are offering £2 off the Malbec, reduced to just £13.50 for an outstanding wine. Something warming for the cold winter evenings. Offer is available both in the shop and online at
