Classic Burgundy

One of the world's most famous wine regions is Burgundy in eastern France. Remarkably almost all the region's wines are made from a single white grape Chardonnay and from a single red grape Pinot Noir. The limestone soil is perfect to produce some of the world's finest wines from these varieties.
Burgundy has a rich tradition of winemaking dating back to at least the Roman period. It is a relatively small region and unlike Bordeaux, there has not been an influx of outsiders buying large areas of vineyards. Plots have often been in the same family for many generations. The Napoleonic inheritance laws ensuring each child has an equal share has sub-divided the vineyards into very small plots.
Traditionally, the vast majority of vineyard owners sold their grapes to merchants who produced and aged the wines before selling them on. Now the most common practice is for the wines to be produced and bottled in the domaine.
One great example of a modern producer respecting the land, terroir and traditions are father and son winemakers Denis and Maxime Dutron at Chateau Vitalis. Chateau Vitallis Pouilly Fuisse Les Perrieres is a beautifully elegant wine. Les Perrières is one of the best sites in Pouilly Fuissé. The wine has aromas of almonds and white blossom. Perfectly balanced, lovely weight with nutty, toasty notes from the very subtle use of oak.
One of my favourite red Burgundies comes from Domaine Cornu-Camus located in Savigny-Les-Beaune between the hills of Corton and Beaune. The hills of the Côte de Beaune recede a little on either side of the little river Rhoin. Savigny Les Beaune Domaine Cornu Camus is a fine, elegant Burgundy from a small producer in the hills just above the Burgundy capital of Beaune. Raspberry fruit aromas, silky smooth in the mouth with good fruit, mineral and a hint of spice.
The festive time of year is maybe a time to indulge a little with these or other wines from this most noble of wine regions. Perfect with Christmas dinner and versatile to work with many different foods, I would recommend a drop of Burgundy this Christmas.
