Wine Talk September 2016

Welcome
We have had a great couple of months at Talking Wines with the launch of Garden Tiger Gin and our Breton cider Le P’tit Fausset doing so well. The weather has helped and it has be encouraging to see so many of our customers and a few new ones during the summer.
We continue to develop our list with new additions from Greece, Lebanon and a wonderful Clare Valley Riesling. To make room for our new wines we always have some interesting bargains on bin end, so it is worth a look to see what you can pick up.
We are looking forward to our tasting with Barney Wilzac of Capreolus Distillery featuring the Garden Tiger Gin. You can join Barney at Talking Wines on the 23rd September, see details below.
We look forward to seeing you soon.

Simon.

Luis Canas – A Rioja Legend
Rioja is the leading Spanish wine region much loved by British wine drinkers. It is firmly in our wine drinking consciousness, much like the classic regions of France. The Tempranillo Garnacha blends with their distinctive oak ageing have been perennially popular. Like all wine regions however, fierce international competition has led to a drive to increase standards.
One of the producers that has been leading the way for many years is a long-time Talking Wines favourite Bodegas Luis Canas. The Canas family have been growing grapes for over one hundred years. After selling grapes to other producers for many years, Luis Canas started making his own wines at the winery in 1970.
Although Luis Canas is still at the wi

nery at the age of 87, his son Juan Luis Canas now heads the company. With their fantastic fruit and lightness of touch in the wine making, Luis Canas make a great range of elegant white and red Riojas.
My favourite white is the Barrel Fermented Rioja Blanco. Made from 50 year old vines it is a blend of 85% Viura and 15 % Malvasia with four months ageing in a combination of French and American oak. The result is an elegant wine with a rounded texture balancing the citrus fruit.
My pick of the reds is the Reserva de la Familia, a rich full wine with beautifully integrated oak and fruit. It is unusual for a Rioja as it contains 15% Cabernet Sauvignon from old vines dating back to when the region experimented with international grape varieties. It is forbidden to plant these varieties now, but they can utilise those already planted.
You can enjoy Luis Canas wines with a discount of 10% off selected wines when you visit the shop during September and we will have the wines available to taste on Saturday 17th.
