Roll on Rosé Summer

The weather has turned at last and as thoughts turn to outdoor living and barbeques, rosé wines start to come into their own. There is something about the colour, the fruit and the refreshing nature of rosé that makes it perfect for summer drinking.

The home of all things rosé is unquestionably the south of France. Rosé was popular here before it became fashionable elsewhere. They set the standard and they like it dry.

The principle grapes for rosé are Grenache, Cinsaut and Syrah but several

Griset Sauvignon Gris

others are also commonly used. The colour comes from the skin contact with the black grapes for just a short time to impart enough pink hue to the wine.

The vast majority of rosé wines is made from black grapes, It is also possible to make rosé from pink or ‘grey’ grapes. These have a pink colour to the skins that enable a longer skin contact and thus more flavour.

One example of this is our Griset Sauvignon Gris. The flavour is much more akin to an aromatic white wine. Zingy fresh with zesty pink grapefruit flavours. It is quite unusual and a great alternative to those made from black grapes.

To celebrate the onset of warmer weather we will be offering a 10% discount across selected rosé wines this month in the shop. We will be tasting a few of the wines on Saturday 14th May. I hope you can join us and select your favourite rosé for the summer.
