Made by the Glover family in Dillons Point. Zephyr Gewurztraminer has a wonderfully aromatic nose of rose petals and ginger with a luscious texture in the mouth.
Zephyr Wines is a family winery based in Dillon’s Point, Marlborough and was started by the Glover family in 1985 after being inspired by other mavericks in the region to convert their farm to vine. They’ve never looked back and Owen and Wendy Glover, along with son Ben, one of New Zealand’s most acclaimed and talented winemakers, now produce award-winning wines from what has become one of the most established single vineyards in the region. Tim Atkin described the Zephyr Sauvignon Blanc as “about as good as Marlborough gets” and Matthew Jukes says their Pinot would “wow Burgundian stalwarts”. The Zephyr Gewurztraminer and a Riesling follow suit in showcasing the more savoury and ‘savage’ style Zephyr has become renowned for. The critics are proving what we’ve known for a long time: that the Glover’s are styling something special out Marlborough that no-one else has.
The Glover family vineyards, planted in 1985 alongside the meandering Opawa River, have inspired the family’s passion for wine. The vineyard is now very much an aromatic specialist with Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer and Riesling. The viticultural and winemaking philosophy embraces the structural strengths of the vineyard. The wines show classic cool climate precision matched with palate depth and the ability to support texture. Winemaker Ben Glover says “I have always wanted to express the exquisite refined bouquet, the precise structure and the ‘line’ of these aromatic wines from our farm. Zephyr allows me to do this – winegrowing is a natural expression and extension of what our family and I have done on this property for years and the opportunity to pay them back with home grown, world class wines is too good to be true,” says Ben.
