1901. In Maraussan, in the Languedoc, “Vignerons Libres” (free winegrowers) founded France’s first cooperative winery. These pioneers were the direct descendants of small winegrowers who had succeeded in buying their land from their masters after the French Revolution, and they now set about consolidating production while expanding the distribution of their wines via the railways. Impressed by their spirit of collective action, Jean Jaurès bought shares in the cooperative.
1914. The Vignerons Libres further cemented their reputation by offering their wines to the army in order to boost morale among the troops. This also had the effect of bringing wine to a wider audience, at a time when many preferred beer or cider. Other cooperatives soon began to spring up in the region, eventually joining forces in the 1970s in order to restructure their vineyards and modernise their production facilities.
1967. In Carcassonne, the wineries Puichéric, Thézan les Corbières and Les Vignerons de la Cité joined forces to form Les Vignobles Foncalieu. In 1995 the historic Cave de Maraussan was renamed Les Vignerons du Pays d’Ensérune, becoming part of the Vignobles Foncalieu family in 2001.
